Perplexity vs ChatGPT search
Two ways to search with AI: one built as a cited search engine, the other as a chat that can search. They do not compete on the same mental screen.
| Perplexity | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Best as a search engine | Answer with numbered references; the flow is search → open → decide | Search inside the chat; useful when you already draft in the same thread |
| Visible citations | Always in the answer; hard to ignore them | They appear, but long prose buries them unless you look |
| Search UX | Single-question page; history of research queries | Chat window; search is a mode, not the whole product |
| Modes / focus | Focus (All, Academic, Writing, etc.) narrows source type | Web search on/off; no equally explicit source profiles |
| Answer format | Dense summary with short paragraphs and footnotes | Conversational prose; easier to mix opinion with fact |
| Main risk | A summary that looks verified because it has citation numbers | Fluent text that cites poorly or blends source with inference |
| Habit that matters | Open at least two sources before copying a figure | Ask explicitly for «only what appears in sources» and check links |
| When to switch | When you already have facts and need to draft, shift tone or iterate | When the question is only «what do sources say?» and not a deliverable |
Verdict
For a bounded question with sources you will actually open, Perplexity wins: the interface pushes citations and follow-up links. ChatGPT with search fits when you are already in a drafting thread and only need to cross-check a fact without switching tools. The usual failure: reading the summary as if it were the source and not opening two citations before deciding.
